There is simply no shortage of ways to quit smoking. In fact, with so many different ways to quit and ideas that people have about quitting, it’s almost hard to imagine why anyone would have a problem quitting.
The fact is that anyone can quit, but most struggle for a long time until they finally learn how to quit. And most who finally quit smoking cigarettes come to realize that it is one simple thought, one single idea, one very profound change-your-life-forever concept that makes the difference between struggling to quit and successfully breaking the habit and quitting smoking forever.
The best way to quit smoking is, of course, the method that works for you. No matter how you quit, this one simple idea is essential to successfully quitting. Whether you use the patch, a program of affirmations and visualization, nicotine gum, or a pill as your approach to quitting, adopting this one belief is almost an iron-clad guarantee that you will be successful.
But beyond that belief or thought is a need for action. Quitting is not a passive activity where you decide one moment to quit and then a moment later you’re magically a non-smoker. That’s why quitting with the cold turkey method has one of the lowest success rates of all the different techniques – there’s a lack of action to reinforce the thought of quitting smoking. Quitting cold turkey can be compared to wanting to get somewhere in a car. Imagine how far you would get if you make the decision to go somewhere, but then never get in the car, never put it in gear, and never step on the gas. You won’t get very far.
Those who use the cold turkey technique decide they’re going to quit, they may set a date to quit, and then on that date their entire focus is on not smoking. There’s no planning involved other than setting the date, no preparation, and no follow through with supporting actions. The “actions” they take, avoiding a cigarette, are actually counter productive since it focuses their attention on smoking a cigarette, not on quitting. And too often the little bit of preparation and planning doesn’t include that one simple, profound thought that can make the difference.
So what is that thought? It’s a simple statement: “I can quit smoking.” Like many deep, profound thoughts, it may seem to be entirely too simplistic to have the power to make the difference in your attempts to quit smoking cigarettes. But it is that thought, that statement, which can make all the difference in quitting.
That statement is so powerful because it takes you from a position of needing to struggle to quit to a position of strength where you are in command and you have demoted the power of the addiction to cigarettes to a position below your own innate power and strength. When you accept the idea that you can quit and adopt it as your attitude toward smoking, you are acknowledging and putting into action the internal strength we all have but most have not learned to put to use. And you’re putting that strength to work to overcome the habit and quit smoking cigarettes forever.
That statement takes you from a weak position where you’re programmed to fail to a position of strength from which you are in control and which helps you by reinforcing you in your efforts to quit. Henry Ford said, “If you think you can, or if you think you can’t, either way, you’re right.” The moment you adopt the attitude that you can quit smoking cigarettes, you have started on the path to quitting successfully.
Every smoker who has ever quit has come to an understanding and an acceptance that they can quit. They stop denying their inner strength and abilities, and start believing in their strengths and abilities. We each have more power and strength than we know, and accepting this as a true statement gives you the reason to understand that you can quit.
